Prison Blog

In which Possum recounts his experiences as an offender in the system.

Possum Bones is autistic. He has identified as a dirty kid in the past, and he’s attended multiple rainbow gatherings. He has several years left to serve in the Washington Correctional system.

He has been making art since he could sit up. He communicates better in writing than speech. If you are interested in the experience of an autistic person doing prison time, check out his Prison Blog. If you are a fan of comic art, underground/outsider music, Lovecraft, Clarke Ashton Smith, Murakami, Cixui Liu, etc.

How to be an indie comic

I've read enough comics at this point and done enough drawing/writing to know when a comic is quaintly indie and when it's not passing. It's true that very good writing can save very simple or very bad art. Examples: Order of the Stick, Gunnerkrigg Court, Early episodes of Gnoph*. However, bad art detracts from the 'dramability' of ... most... stories. Exception : Memoirs. A memoir can be very badly drawn because it evokes a sense of authenticity. Something like Conan or Batman requires a certain level of skill to convey drama. Third. Bad composition. This is as damning for a comic as it is for a film. It might actually be worse for a comic because bad composition is even more obvious in freeze frame. Very good composition can save 'sloppy' or loosely portrayed art and also can save even terrible writing. Example: Genndy tartakovsky. His art is relatively simplistic, but his skill with composition makes his work seem larger than life. Very good composition can also be used to hide or dissemble from technically troublesome tasks. Example: Aspect to aspect transitions in japanese comics (See Scott Mcloud:Understanding comics). Very bad writing when it comes to the plot is almost entirely acceptable in the presence of very good composition and art, because comics is such a visual medium ( Arguably more so than film: The images are frozen for our study. ) . Very bad writing when it comes to the inter-comic narration and dialogue is actually much worse than a simple or hackneyed plot. Unrealistic dialogue, confusing narration, and spelling errors seriously detract from the intended drama of a comic when it isn't intentionally comedic.
