Vinland saga 13 comments
This volume Vinland Saga is starting to read more like the Makoto Yukimura who wrote Planetes. That's not a bad thing. I expected things to head in this direction around the time gudrid showed up . The first 8 or so volumes of Vinland Saga were heavily out of sorts with the Yukimura I knew from planetes, not in a bad way, just in a " Wow, this is Yukimura ? Its so... grim and violent " . At its heart, Planetes was a love story. You didn't see it at first, because it was wrapped up in hard sci fi. Yukimura is really a writer of love stories . But not the heart throbbing, awkward moments and fan service laden type of love stories that are typical in manga. He writes the long , drawn out kind of romance , stories of peoples lives told on a grander scale than is typical in manga. The formula has more in common with literature like Wuthering Heights than it does with the greatest shojo classics. This makes him unique as a storyteller in the field of manga. Planetes and Vinland saga are also very male centric without being sexist. Male centric as in story is told in a way that highlights the emotions and experiences of men, but its also a love story. Maybe Vinland Saga will follow a similar strange arc as Planetes did.
